Congratulations Kim Johnson

Congratulations to Kim Johnson – one of USA Softball’s six newly certified umpires for international competitions by the World Baseball Softball Confederation – Softball Division!  Kim completed testing at a WBSC Umpire Seminar in early June.  The testing includes written examinations, on field evaluation, leadership testing, and physical skills tests.  Kim, who is a Deputy Umpire In Chief for USA Softball of Cincinnati, is one of four Cincinnati umpires with USA Softball Elite status.  This status is a pre-requisite for applying for WBSC Certification.  Be sure and congratulate Kim next time you see him on the field!

SW District Softball Umpire Classes

Friends -
The attached flyers are for our softball classes in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas that are coming up in about three weeks.  New softball umpires are needed.

The class is targeting female and minority participants but is open to all.  While most students have typically been adults OHSAA regulations now allow high school students of all ages to participate in these classes.  The attached announcements provide details concerning these two classes.  For more information please contact – Jerry Fick – swdoc@fuse.net or 513-563-2755.

Thanks again for helping us!

Jerry

ASA Fast Pitch Camp for 2016 – Blacksburg, VA

All,

Attached please find the flyer for the advanced FP camp we are hosting in 2016 in Blacksburg Va.  We hosted a NUS there a few years back and I believe we will all find that it is an excellent facility for hosting an advance camp.  It is being held on the VA Tech campus in Blacksburg with their varsity field just outside the field house and several intramural fields within an easy walk from the field house.  The field house is large enough to be used for the various drills in the event of inclement weather.

Please distribute the flyer to your umpires – we will be taking the first 60 to sign up.  Our Piedmont VA ASA Local UIC, Randy Sprouse, has already been getting inquiries from all over the country so we expect to fill the camp.

Thanks for your consideration,

Jim

January 7, 2015

Dear Blue Chip Umpire:

Soon our meetings will be underway. We will again be at Finneytown High School, 8916 Fontainebleau – just west of Winton Road (north of Galbraith and south of Compton). Dates are:
Monday, February 2
Monday, February 9
Wednesday, February 18
Monday, February 23
Monday, March 2
Monday, March 9
Tuesday, March 17
Monday, March 23
Monday, April 6 – 730PM – later start this meeting only

All sessions will start at 7PM unless noted. Please note that there will be no meeting the week of March 30. Also due to extra meetings being scheduled, it is unlikely that we will reschedule any meetings cancelled due to weather. Please plan accordingly and remember your minimum requirement of four local rules meetings.

One of our veteran umpires, Jack Fisher, is the principal at Finneytown and has again been gracious enough to open his school to us. Let’s make sure that we are “good guests” and continue to leave the building in the same good condition we find it.

Your dues remain only $15 – because of OHSAA attendance recording procedures these are to be paid at your first meeting. Attendance credit can be given only to the umpires who have paid their dues. If you prefer you may also mail a check payable to Blue Chip Umpires to the above address. Late Dues will increase to $25. Please pay promptly as we only want to collect $15 from you.

We have some changes in the baseball instructional staff for this year. Don Reuss will handle the veteran sessions. The new umpires and Class 2 meetings will be handled by Matt Kleiner, Sean Burns, Dan Imbronyev and Bob Eckert. Our softball instructional team returns intact from last year.

We also point out the following mandatory OHSAA clinics this year:
Thursday, February 26
OHSAA State Rules Interpretation Meetings at Monroe High School Baseball – 6:00 P.M. – Softball – 6:00 P.M.
A local meeting will be offered in connection with these two meetings. See details in your mailing from the OHSAA.
There will also be an online state meeting option – consult your mailing from the OHSAA, myohsaa, or www.ohsaa.org for details. There will be no state meeting credit offered for any meetings at Finneytown High School this year.

For locations of other state or local meetings consult your mailing from OHSAA, visit www.ohsaa.org or your myohsaa account.

Also note mandatory for ASA softball tournament umpires:
ASA Metro Umpires Clinic
Saturday, February 21 – St. Rita School for the Deaf – 9 to 4
Sunday, February 22 – Mid America Ballyard – Sunday 9 to 1

Cincinnati ASA is continuing to grow with many new leagues in both fast pitch and slow pitch this year. This is a great way for umpires to work all summer. Attend this clinic and learn more!

Remember high school umpires must attend four meetings – the ASA meeting counts for softball umpires as one meeting each day toward the high school requirement. Attendance at the ASA clinic is mandatory for umpires working ASA tournaments.

ASA umpires should also note that additional information concerning clinics, meetings, and annual registration will be sent to you in the near future. The ASA National Umpire School will be held in Cincinnati May 29-31. If you would like details on the National School please visit cincinnatiasa.com.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE – We are all working very hard to recruit new umpires in both baseball and softball. You are our best source for new umpires. For details relating to new baseball umpires contact Matthew Kleiner, Baseball Class Instructor at mkleiner@fuse.net or 503-0557. For details concerning new softball umpires please contact me at 563-2755 or swdoc@fuse.net. Due to new OHSAA procedures all new umpires must register for the class online and in advance. Class participants should contact Matthew for baseball or me for softball and we will forward all registration procedures and details. Email works best for this!

AN ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT NOTE – Please visit the myohsaa section (upper right hand corner) at www.ohsaa.org. Use the username and password that was sent with your state permit to log on, set up your profile, and check information on meeting dates and sites. You must enter your email address on your profile as that is the way that the OHSAA, member schools, and the Blue Chip Association will communicate with you. Also remember to update your account with changes to your phone number or your addresses. It is also important to check this as we have several umpires who have not renewed their OHSAA permits for 2015 (the renewal was due June 30, 2014) and must do a late renewal by January 31 (note: NO extensions are granted) in order to umpire this year. If you can not access your account it is likely that you have not renewed. Late renewal information can be found at this link: http://www.ohsaa.org/officials/renewpermit.htm

We are all excited about the coming season and look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meetings.

Sincerely yours,
Jerry Fick
